10 Things You Can Do in the Next 10 Days to Live Up to Your Potential
How are you progressing in life? Are you in control, or do you feel life is just “happening” to you?
Maybe you thought that by now you’d be famous, or at least wealthy. But our childhood dreams only come true if we make them true.
Maybe you have accomplished much, but you secretly feel you could do more or be more. And you don’t know what’s holding you back.
Here’s something to consider: You’ve already achieved everything you really believe you can. Change what you believe, and you can achieve so much more.
Examining your own beliefs about your true potential—and then working to expand those beliefs so they include even greater success—is the easiest way to raise the bar. In fact, it’s the only way.

If you’re not making a beeline toward recognizing and fulfilling your potential, here are ten things you can do in the next ten days to take the first steps toward personal growth and achievement.
Read one item from this list each day and work on incorporating it into your life. As you add new skills, don’t forget to keep up the lessons from the earlier days. These are subtle but important changes in perspective and behavior that will help you attract the prosperity you want and deserve.
Day 1. Stop negative talk. Decide that today, and from here on, that you will never describe your potential in negative terms. Never again say, “I couldn’t possibly do this” or “I gave up my dream years ago.” Unless you actually want to limit yourself, stop sending energy to those negative concepts.
Day 2. Visualize. Take some time to form a mental picture of yourself as someone whose life is right on track. What have you accomplished that you’re proud of? Think of someone you admire, and picture yourself in those shoes. Develop the most complete, positive picture of yourself you can, and return to that image often throughout the day.
Day 3. Affirm. It’s not enough to just stop saying what you can’t do; you must say that you are blessed. No matter what condition you are in at this moment, you have the power to claim a better condition. When you wake up in the morning, say aloud, “I am on the right path, and growing every day.” As you drive, repeat, “I know the next step to take and I’m proud of what I’ve already done.”
Before you retire at night, say aloud, “My dreams tonight will give me even more insights into my personal development.” Draw energy to that perfect vision of yourself by describing your vision in words—out loud— and often.
Day 4. Pray. If you’re not a religious type, or not sure you believe in God, choose your higher self, a higher power, Nature, guardian angels, or whatever you think is “out there.” Ask for help in three parts: a request, an affirmation and a thank you. “Spirit, please help me live up to my potential. I now am on a path where I’m achieving everything I am capable of. Thank you, Spirit, for helping me grow.”
Day 5. Write a goal. Begin with that perfect picture of yourself from Day #2, but expand it now. See yourself doing the things that person who is actively improving his potential would do, and write those things down. “I know how my mind works, I have balance in all areas of my life, and I have access to people who know how to help me.”
Day 6. Write a plan. To get from where you are to where you want to be will require action. Figure out some of the steps on that path. Do you need to read books about getting your finances or your household in order? Should you hire a personal trainer? Choose one area and one action plan, and write down the first step. If you decide to work on achieving your full potential in a number of areas, the first step might be making an appointment for a consultation with a life coach who can assess your situation.
Day 7. Feel grateful. It might sound counter-intuitive to be “thankful” for what you have accomplished when you feel like a failure. But in fact, even if you fall short of your full potential, you have accomplished much. Be grateful for the progress you’ve made, and that attitude of gratitude will help draw accomplishment to you. Thank your God, or life itself, that you are now living the life you secretly know is possible for you. Imagine how grateful you will feel, and hold that feeling in your heart.
Day 8. Forgive. This is a difficult step for many people, but it’s vital. Imagine: You will only have the level of personal accomplishment you wish for your worst enemy. If you now believe someone is to blame for holding you back from developing your full potential—a former spouse who belittled you, the parent who told you you’d never amount to anything—find a way to believe that they were doing the best they could do at the time. If you realize that your own fear has been holding you back, forgive yourself, too. You did the best you could then, and are now ready to make a new, more courageous start.
Day 9. Release the past. Tied to forgiving is the idea of letting go of what was. You don’t have to be the way you’ve always been. If you used to call yourself a “loser,” you’ve stopped that negative talk already. You’re already taking steps to determine just what your potential might be. Be willing to let go of the things that tied you to being an underachiever, whether it was discouraging friends or a go-nowhere job. Break the pattern and let go of the way things were before. You are born anew.
Day 10. Let joy in. Sometimes we become so accustomed to achieving little, we forget to appreciate our minor accomplishments. When suddenly we get praise for doing something well, we begin to doubt the person praising us. But to have joy in your life, you’re going to have to let yourself trust in joy, and believe you deserve it, and celebrate its arrival. Joy is always fleeting; recognize it when it comes and savor it fully. It will return more often.
After you’ve spent ten days unlearning bad habits, learning good ones, and adding activities to your day, see if you can keep them up for another ten days, and then perfect them in the ten days after that. Pray, visualize, and affirm every day. Watch what you say and think, and keep yourself positive. Forgive those who wrong you and feel grateful for the things that go right. Keep writing down your goals and action plans. When you catch yourself clinging to old ways, let them go. And let yourself feel good about it! One month from today, you’ll be headed in a whole new direction—toward personal growth and increased personal potential.
